Tour de Blast 2018

OK before I recap the ride I need to address a couple of things! If you are a rider reading this before the 2019 or beyond ride remember 2 things!

1) Do NOT believe the weather forecast!!! Make sure to have rain gear in the car with you just in case!!

2) This route EATS tires! Have plenty of extra tubes, patch kits, pump and CO2 with you! Also your toughest tires!!

OK, so lets talk about the ride… Continue reading “Tour de Blast 2018”

A tale of two photos

Anyone who knows me in person, on Facebook or from this blog, knows how I feel about photos of me. I have firm rule, if it makes me giggle, I want to share it. I honestly love to make people laugh.

Looking at these still make me laugh! This week, I posted a couple to both Instagram and Facebook. I very much love the comments I received… Continue reading “A tale of two photos”

Racking Up the Miles: July 2015

Wow, I looked at the calendar yesterday and realized “Holy Crap!  It’s August!!” Even though I had been tracking the days and watching out for the big ride of the year, it still surprised the heck out of me that we all already into the last real month of Summer.

So far this year, we have had a record 12 days of 90 or higher in Seattle.  The past record was 9 days.  And August is notoriously the hottest month of the year.  I swear I might melt!  But this post is not to whine about the weather, its to talk about the miles for the month… Continue reading “Racking Up the Miles: July 2015”

Sturdy bike, COUG Shirt, Must be Tony!

When I first started riding a bike, back in 2008, there was one guy (The husband of a friend of the ex-wife (Who still holds the prestige of being the only guy I truly disliked on first sight)) who would Lord over me “Well you aren’t a real Washington cyclist until you have ridden the RAMROD (Ride Around Mt Rainier in One Day)” He would then drone on talking about it. (by then I tuned him out)

He was the catalyst to start me on the quest to complete this ride.  Yesterday was my chance to do so… Continue reading “Sturdy bike, COUG Shirt, Must be Tony!”

The Time is Nigh….

Back in 2007 our buddy Mountainstroh stored his crampons, lost his glacier glasses and hung up his ice-axe.  Like an old west sheriff, he reached the time to retire.  Going strictly on my won/loss record (or summit/no summit) I was a dismal 2 and 6 over 12 years,  with the only real summits reached being Mt Baker and Mt St Helens.

Starting in 2008, the challenge shifted to 2 wheels instead of plastic boots, and roadways instead of glaciers.  In the last 7 years and 20000 miles I have yet not to succeed.  Yep, undefeated.  This week will put that record to the test… Continue reading “The Time is Nigh….”

Milestone, Nature ride and “It’s because you are a COUG!”

This was a the perfect weekend for a long ride.  The weather was still cloudy and cool. It is 3 weeks until the RAMROD and the Manchild was not up this weekend.  Plus, once again Michelle was telling me YES you will ride!  Add it all together, it was the perfect day for to catch a ferry and do a century (100 miles) to Sequim and back.

Not my best ride ever

Have y’all gotten tired of my whining about the heat yet?  if so, then I am sorry for at least one more.  We are about to hit the 6th day of 90 degree heat (a first ever for us) and at 92 degrees, yesterday was the hottest Independence Day in 124 years!

Given all this, but still needing to ride, our hero was out of bed at 445 and on the road at 5 AM to beat the heat… Continue reading “Not my best ride ever”

You look like you are in pretty decent shape…

A quick glance at the calendar tells me that the RAMROD, my big ride for the year, is a little over a month away.  This means I am rapidly running out of weekend days left to me to get training rides in.

Because of this, even though it was Saturday morning, my alarm went off at 4 AM.  After slapping the snooze button twice, I finally drug my butt out of bed at 4:30.  There were a few reasons for this early start. Continue reading “You look like you are in pretty decent shape…”

The world at 7 mph

I have had many posts about the name Mountainstroh (as in my web page Mountainstroh.com) so I won’t get into detail here of its origin.  Suffice it to say, the name was inspired by Mt. Rainier, a place I have gone to since I was in grade schoolKids rainier

Thursday, I took the day off, threw the bike on the back of the car, and headed up there again. It was the perfect day.

Get a bike and join us!

Well, folks, yesterday was the 4th big ride of the month, The Flying Wheels Summer Century.  Of all of them, it was the one I was least excited about.  I do it every year since its close and a good training ride, but the past years have not been a lot of fun due to weather, cars and other cyclists.  So I got up and resigned myself for a 100 mile workout.  I was hoping not to be grouchy at the end.

Maybe it’s because of my low expectations for the day, or the cycle gods were on my side, but I was pleasantly surprised how it turned out! Continue reading “Get a bike and join us!”
