Social distancing Oregon Coast Cyclist style

Ok people, there aint no one who can say stuff is getting real. REI closed, baseball delayed, bars and resturaunts told to shut down, no wine tastings allowed, and lord knows finding a damn roll of toilet paper is like looking for the holy grail

This post is not to make light of what people are going through, pure and simple, it’s scary! Plus, most of the people Michelle and I have come to care for down here are in the service industry. It is going to be damn hard on them!

We are all going through stressful times though. We are being told to practice social distancing. Making sure there is a 6 foot buffer around us. Some people are taking this to mean “Stay home and hide!”

Seriously a 2 mile climb with a headwind???

One of the accounts I follow on Instagram is for a French Fry Mooching seagull affectionately known as FathomsBarBuddy.

He hangs out on the ledge at Fathoms Bar, up on the 10th floor of the Inn at Spanish Head

He has some  pearls of wisdom that come from his feathered head and orange beak. (If you are an instagram user just search Fathomsbarbuddy, all one word.)

One of his tidbits is to “Never waste a winter day when the rains stop!”

Folks, let me tell you, as I type this, our rain gage says we have 15.36 inches of rain since January 1! Our average for January is only 10.4″  (thanks Alexa!) we are well above average and its windy and rainy this evening.

A short window of opportunity!

When I am at work and talking with other insurance companies, quite often I get asked by the big national insurance companies where the Mighty P, the company I work for, is based out of. Almost invariably, when I say Seattle, I hear. “Does it REALLy rain there all the time?”

I of course say YES IT DOES! We want people to think it looks like this

We try not to let people know that a lot of the time the Northwest really  looks like this!

If keeps down the crowds you know.

Birthday Miles and Then Some!

Every year I have a dilemma.

Some time or other in the last 11 years I have been cycling, I picked up the tradition of riding my birthday miles on my birthday.

Now if you are in your 20s or 30s, and were born during daylight savings time, this would be easy.

However, this year I turn 55 later this month (UGH! I can no longer dodge saying I am in my mid 50s!) And my birthday is on a weekday that I am working, AND weather in November on the coast can be rough!

This means I have modified the tradition. In my book I fulfill the task if I ride my birthday years on any day of November.  Today was that day!

Autumn at the Oregon Coast

I first started to title this post “Fall at the Oregon Coast”. However, since I am a bike rider, where falls do occur, and my mom reads the blog (and worries) I decided to title it AUTUMN at the Oregon Coast.

OK, on to the post!

Most people visit here in the summer when the sun is warm, the water, although cold, is calm, and there is a good chance of no rain.

The roads around here start getting busy in May. Then from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the coast, especially on weekends, is hopping! We DO have traffic jams, and miles long back ups!

I can’t fault folks, it is VERY pretty down here during that time of year.  However, these last couple of weeks are reminding me why I am finding Fall I mean Autumn, to be my favorite time of year at the coast!

Cycling the Yaquina River

Everyone knows how much I love cycling along the Oregon coast. The majority of my miles this year have been between my house in Lincoln City, and Newport. Its a 25 miles stretch of road, much of it with views like this! Oh and yes there is a whale spouting!

I tell people all the time that I ride this route every chance I get, and I never get tired of it. There is ALWAYS something that makes the ride worthwhile.

There are times I want something different. Like today, since I was watching the Seahawks in the morning, I wasn’t able to ride until the afternoon. I try too avoid HWY 101 on Friday’s after work and Sunday afternoons. There are just to many people driving big ole Winnebagoes they aren’t used to.

The Weather is changing

Here we are at the end of our second summer as coast kids. The days are getting shorter. The mornings are a little cooler, and we are getting more rain. Shoot we got two inches between Saturday and Monday morning.
